New operating schedule here at the Black Rock Lock for this season. As I mentioned at the last Buffalo Harbor Safety Meeting we will have a reduced operating schedule. The main reason is due to the recent failure we had of our lower east operating gate anchorage. The cause of failure was determined to be from fatigue failure due to too many cycles (opening and closing) of the gate over its life. Much like a paper clip that you bend 1000 times that then snaps. In order to reduce the number of cycles we will be operating with the following schedule:

13 May – 15 September (Extended Season)
9:00 am – 9:00 pm Weekdays
11:00 am – 10:00 pm Weekends

16 September – 27 October
8:00 am – 4:00 pm 7 days per week

28 October – 31 December
8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday – Friday

Extended Season Schedule for lockages on Weekdays:
Down 9am / 11am / 1pm / 3pm / 5pm / 7pm / 8pm

Up 9:30am / 11:30am / 1:30pm / 3:30pm / 5:30pm /
7:30pm / 8:30pm

Extended Season Schedule for lockages on Weekends:
Down 11am / 1pm / 2pm / 3pm / 4pm / 5pm / 6pm / 7pm /
8pm / 9pm

Up 11:30am / 1:30pm / 2:30pm / 3:30pm / 4:30pm /
5:30pm / 6:30pm / 7:30pm / 8:30pm / 9:30pm

Extended Season Schedule for lockages on Weekday Holidays:
Down 9am / 10am/ 11am / 12pm/ 1pm / 2pm / 3pm / 4pm /
5pm / 6pm / 7pm / 8pm

Up 9:30am / 10:30am / 11:30am / 12:30pm / 1:30pm /
2:30pm / 3:30pm / 4:30pm / 5:30pm / 6:30pm /
7:30pm / 8:30pm

We will be sending out a Notice to Navigation tomorrow or Thursday with an official schedule but this is essentially the new schedule.

An update on construction, I know I said we would be finished today, May 1 but unfortunately we had a few hiccups and now anticipate re-opening the afternoon of Friday, May 4th. We had just placed the last portion of concrete today closing up the repair and need to dive behind the upper gates to remove debris. We have to test the gates and then reopen the guard gates on the upper end which won’t be until Friday morning. We plan to close the lockdown again next winter most likely early December 2018 until mid-April 2019 to repair the remaining anchorages.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
